I heard from my email that Veggielution was opening their farmstand. They were offering a sliding scale price on organic produce grown in Emma Prusch park by radical volunteers. I just had to check it out.

It took me a while to get there, so the beets were all gone when I got there. I got some pak choi, purple stemmed broccoli-ish stuff with yellow flowers, and rosemary. I paid about the grocery store price, but I got fresher food. Also, the grocery store doesn't sell purple stemmed broccoli with yellow flowers.

The staff was very nice. The woman in red gave me a tour of the farm.

That table is where they wash produce before putting it out for sale. The piles are mulch and compost that will eventually go on the fields.

I remember when Aime and Mark were doing underground gardening in donated backyard spaces near San Jose state. They have come a long way since then.

This was the plot they had farmed last year. Since they did such a good job on that, this year the park management had given them another plot, "the acre" to work with as well.

Right now they are growing fava beans on the land, but all except one row of those will probably get plowed under when they plant more vegetables.

My guide explained that sometimes people in the neighborhood that buy hatchling chickens get rid of the roosters a bit later by throwing them over the fence into the field. Because of that, there seem to always be such birds around.

On the way home I discovered that San Fernando St. has become very bike friendly. I just don't remember it being like that back when.

I had that purple broccoli with yellow flowers for supper when I got home. It was delicious.
