My first day in Virginia Beach I badly needed some exercise. The place came with free loaner bicycles. I thought it was funny (in a nice way) that they had solar bikes. They weren't much, one gear coaster break models, but for the perfectly flat boardwalk they were fine. I ended up going all the way from one end of the boardwalk to the other and back, and I took pictures of all the art I saw along the way, just for fun.

That woman waiting for her man's ship to come in is one of the few pieces I remember from the '70s.

They have these public showers every block or so. I guess they get a lot of use on hot summer days, when everybody needs to get salt off their bodies.

Back when I visited Virginia Beach a lot of the motels looked something like this. Two stories, usually around a pool. Now this is about the only one even close to that left. I get this feeling that the economy has to really tank to keep it safe from the developers.

You have to pay money to go out on that pier. I think fishermen consider it a good deal.

Those flying dolphins reminded me a lot of the San Jose Sharks, but they weren't as common. I asked somebody at the ARE bookstore about them. She said they had been a charity fund raiser some time ago. Some of them are still up because people like them.

That crane on the platform was there back then to. I never found out what it's for, but to still be there it must be important to something. Maybe it has something to do with dredging, fishing or Coast Guard rescue operations.

The boardwalk's southern end is a boat channel.
