The park had huge busts of all of the
Presidents to date, each with a sign or two (or three) boiling down the
big accomplishments of the guys life to a few hundred well chosen words.
Jefferson was one of the guys that had
three placards about his life. John Quincy Adams was the first
President who was the son of another President. Jackson was the first
President whose biggest "accomplishments" they forgot to put on his
plaques.
Seems to me there should have been
something about "signed Indian Removal Acts" on the above two pages
somewhere...
These two Presidents are represented in
my book collection by these biographies I keep meaning to get around to
reading... The introduction to Old Tippecanoes bio explains that he was
President during the time when it was hard to find Candidates for the
job. Nobody wanted it. (Nowadays the mere thrill of voting for yourself
for President gives the New Hampshire Presidential Primary a huge list
of choices.) Harrison is now mainly remembered as the guy who gave the
longest inaugural address but lived in
the White House for the shortest period.
Lincoln was the only President with a
gazebo nearby where you could sit and contemplate his face and time in
office.
I'm thunderstruck that they managed to
leave out explicit mention of the Civil War. Why was Blackhawks War
more important than
that?
I was born during Eisenhower's term.
The first President I really remember was Nixon. To date, Carter is the
only occupant of the White house I've voted for. I went to the polls
for the first time to do that in November of 1976. I vaguely
remember the experience.
Someone once told me
that so far Eisenhower is the only President with a German-American
name.
I think they should update this one to
mention his Nobel Peace Prize....
George Herbert Walker Bush was the
President that made me into an activist. The unrelenting
negativity of his '88 Campaign was my first really sour political
experience. I
joined the Green Party so I could ignore the inevitable '92 follow up
by
working on my own campaign.
I saw that "Only President to parachute
out of an airplane", and I got a "they must be scrambling to find an
'ONLY' for him that sounds good" feeling.
