This lecturn was
to the left of the nave. The minister who was hanging out talking to
tourists explained that it had been given to them on the 100th (or was
that 150th?) anniversary of the Declaration of Independance (or
something like that). The donor was some high autority in the Old
World. It was a very beautifully designed piece, with lots of symbolism
in the details. For example, the world is supported by an Eagle and a
Lion, the Eagle symbolizing the USA and the Lion symbolizing the
English Crown. I sort of think it would have made more sense to put the
Eagle under the new world, but the sculptor obviously didn't see it
that way.
