The guy with the
sign that draws parallels between our jobs, bucks, and troops talked
about being unemployed for four years. His job was one of the many that
went off to India or China with all the other technical work that used
to be done by people like us around here.
That picture of Bush is really a collage of pictures of soldiers who
have died in Iraq. The caption reads "In memory of the soldiers who
gave their lives to fight Bush's war in Iraq. May they rest in peace."
To give you an idea what it looks like up close, I've added some detail
from Bush's temple to her right. Thinking about it reminds me of the
time a guy told me "Presidents sometimes kill a lot of people when they
sign something."
Channel 7 interviewed Lenny and took some footage of everybody
having a great time getting cars to toot their horns as they went by.
After we rallied
on the corner of Fremont and Mary for an hour or so we marched down to
the recruiting center and ceremoniously "DON'T DIE FOR A LIE"-ed the
place.
The original
plan called for taping this sign to the recruiting station's front
window, but the cops said "don't do that". The Custers held it
like that while Lenny gave a speech. He pointed out that this war was
based on the thinnest excuses, and called on young people to not join
up with the U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, or Marines. Then
he urged the Sunnyvale residents among us to get together and form a
"Sunnyvale Voices for Peace" group. Rob and Roy recorded it all for
their cable TV shows. If I find out where and when the tape will be
broadcast, I'll update this paragraph with that info then.
Through it all this Sunnyvale Police Officer watched us from the far
side of the parking lot.
