There was a very
efficient bike parking crew. They gave me ticket #2009, stapled the
stub on my handlebars, and parked my bike for me.
When I went in the President was there
to take my money and registration information.
Corinne was greeting, and then there
was a woman who would be glad to sell you a Bike to Work Day shirt.
Once you get by them there was a great buffet that an active staff was
working to keep full of tasty food.
There was also a silent auction table
where you could bid on all sorts of biking equipment, everything from
new bikes to Gore Helium Vests.
Open Space Project played jazzy, bluesy
stuff. Great background, and probably dancable except the crowd wasn't
ready for that. After an hour or so of schmoozing the band took a break
and Corinne started the speaker segment.
The first speaker was Santa Clara
County Supervisor Ken Yeager, who welcomed us to San Jose and pointed
out that being in a dense development mere steps away from a busy light
and heavy rail station is where it's at in San Jose. He is particularly
excited about this development because he worked on it before he got
elected to the City Council.
The other speakers were people I'm not
as familiar with.
The Bike Commuter of the year is
Philipo from the Metro. He has multiple pictures in just about every
issue of the newsweekly. Everybody in the south bay has probably seen
many of his pictures. He commutes to all his photo shoots by bicycle, a
fairly remarkable achievement especially considering all the equipment
he carries.
