Captain Planet greeted us and posed with our table as soon as we got set up. She isn't in this picture, but Carol Brouillet was there at the Green Party table. So was Roy Norbloom. A good time was had by all.

I want to argue with that idea "packaged foods create less waste". Most of the savings comes from only having one serving in the package. If you just cook what you need for this meal, you don't have any waste. If you learn to refrigerate unused portions immediately, and have them later as another meal, then you don't have much waste either. Considerable energy goes into creating the packaging that packaged foods come in, and being a good cook saves you from most of that!

Veggielution is totally great! They started out planting food in garden spots that they could find permission to grow. Now they have a much larger farm plot on government land. They get volunteers to do everything, and donate a lot of the food to needy families. I think they sell some at farmers markets to.

The Student table was handing out NO ON 1A! buttons and getting people to pledge to oppose it. Another student table was handing out these cool water bottles. You had to sign a pledge to use it to get one. I have no trouble with that. It wasn't long after I got that green one that I put a sticker on it. I hope somebody else reads it on my back or in my hand or...

Lots of groups were handing out cloth bags. I got one from Whole Foods.

The CSA group gave me four delicious peeled baby carrots with ranch dressing.

It seemed like everybody was passing out refillable shopping bags. Shown here is the guy from the City of San Jose's waste management department doing so. Even the EPA gave out 50 of them that were quickly snapped up.
Among my favorite sights from the event were these great reading shirts!
