Breasts Not Bombs
For immediate
Release: Oct. 28, 2005
Breasts
Not Bombs and Musicians and Fine Artists for World Peace are planning a
topless
peace demonstration on Monday, Nov. 7th in Sacramento from noon till 3
PM,
on the West steps of the State Capitol Building in Sacramento the day
before
Arnold Schwarzenegger's special election.
We invite everyone to
join us to bare witness to the outrageous behavior of the governor and
let
the public know that we are paying attention and are unwilling to be
silent
or bullied into submission," said Sherry Glaser, the founder of Breasts
Not
Bombs. "We have a message for Mr. Schwarzenegger and will carry signs
that
state what really is the difference between what is descent and what is
not.
"
Special Elections are indecent! Groping women in elevators is
indecent! School budget cuts are indecent! Violence against
women is indecent!
Threatening teachers is indecent! Disrespecting nurses is
indecent! Redistricting
for political gain is indecent! Driving a Hummer is
indecent! War is indecent!
Poverty is indecent! Hunger is indecent! Fixing elections
is indecent!
Interfering with a woman's right to choose is indecent!
Discrimination because
of sexual orientation is indecent!
"Many of us feel that the policies
of our Hollywood Governor are offensive to good and decent working
class
people. It is clear that the millions of dollars spent on this "Special
Election"
could have been better spent on education, health care, housing, food
banks,
etc., etc. Mr. Schwarzenegger has profoundly offended thousands
of service
providers in our state from nurses, to firefighters, to union members,
to
teachers. This ballot is one big insult to privacy and integrity in our
social
fabric. Muster your courage and join us to show Arnold that we have an
extraordinary
power and presence and our voices will be heard," said Glaser
"Glaser
wants to make the point that breasts are not indecent," said Moore.
"The
baring of breasts, even being totally nude in a political
demonstration,
is protected by the First Amendment and affirmed by a US Appellate
Court.
On October 27 Glaser was given a permit to demonstrate, but warned
by State Highway Patrol Officer Troy that if the women go topless they
will
be arrested in violation of two penal codes - 314 & 647. "Not
only will
we be arrested but our permit will be revoked immediately," Glaser
added.
"We
have since secured an attorney who says that we have a marvelous case
for
violation of free speech. He is willing to file an injunction
with the DA's
office to keep them from interfering. This could be a landmark
demonstration
for our rights as well as a chance to define once again the indecencies
of
these oppressive and dominating systems. It's ironic that Arnold
Schwarzenegger
can grope and molest women's bodies and become Governor yet we stand in
power
exercising our 1st amendment rights and we get arrested," said Glaser
In
case the police actually plan to go through with their threat, Moore
ordered
butterfly pasties so the women who don't want to risk arrest can cover
up
even though even totally nude protests are a constitutionally protected
right.
In a similar situation in West Palm Beach, Florida, a federal court
judge barred the state of Florida from trying to block plans by a group
of
women to gather in a state park, strip nude and form a peace symbol
with
their bodies in protest of the U.S. war on Iraq.
U.S. District Judge
Donald M. Middlebrooks wrote an eleven-page order stating that "nude
overtly
political speech in the form of a 'living nude peace symbol' is
expressive
conduct well within the ambit of the First Amendment."
Middlebrooks also
ruled, however, that the state could erect signs to notify the public
that
the protest would be taking place, or it could put screens around the
demonstrators.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida went to court in defense
of a naturist and a videographer who planned to record the event. The
demonstration
finally went ahead on February 14, 2003, at John D. MacArthur Beach
State
Park on Singer Island, north of West Palm Beach.
Glaser held three
previous Breasts Not Bombs demonstrations where the women were not
threatened
at all with arrest. The first on May 30, 2005, in front of the
Press Democrat
in Santa Rosa, the second on June, 30, 2005 in front of Macy's in Union
Square
in San Francisco that even had a totally nude woman, and the last on
September
24, 2005, in Washington, DC during the mass protest against the Iraq
War.
Alan
Moore, one of the event organizers and director of the 1200 plus member
Musicians
and Fine Artists for World Peace, organized 10,000 children to raise
butterflies
in their classrooms for Earth Day in 1999 as a program sponsored by
Butterfly
Gardeners Association. According to Moore, "Imagine how many
children we
could reach if we had the educational funds to do more and got the
Sacremento
Police Department and State Highway Patrol to cooperate with us so we
could
proceed with this simple and symbolic act of peace and love
unencumbered
and not threatened with arrest. We plan to proceed as planned," Moore
stated.
Men are welcome as they have breasts too.

Breasts Not Bombs Special Election Protest w. Sherry
Glaser - Sacramento
Sherry
Glaser is having a Breasts Not Bombs demo on Monday, Nov. 7th in
Sacramento
at noon, the day before Arnold Schwarzenegger's special election.
She would
like this to a theatrical protest with musicians, drummers, poets and
dancers.
Theatrical demonstrations as she is proposing have more protections
under
the law than just having the women protest topless.
If you would
like to stand with her and the other women in defense of the first
amendment
and say no to the Terminator's Special Election propositions, please
give
the following a read and let me know if you would like to join us.
Performers
do not have to be topless, but nothing is stopping you from doing so.
Location: West steps of the State Capitol Building, Sacramento
A Demonstration to show what is the difference between what is descent
and what is not.
