The talk of the town was that Obama
is coming! Everybody with a political axe to grind was welcome to
go to Palo Alto and wave their signs on the street he was expected
to drive down. I pulled out my "It's time to cut carbon" and
figured out how to carry it on my bike. I took the camera along.
This is what I came back with.
Rode the last part of the trip with
Dana and Gerry. I'd stopped at their house along the way to help
make egg noodle ravioli from scratch. That was fun but I didn't
take any pictures. Remember eating the ravioli later though. Yumm!
When I got where the guild sent me
there were a couple of dozen people staying on the sidewalk
because the cops were complaining and browbeating every time
someone touched the pavement with their shoe.
Lisa announced that Obama was more
likely to come down another street. She asked us all to join the
other people there. I went. Yup. There were more interesting signs
there.
That idea that tar sands oil triple
our carbon dioxide (C02) emissions per gallon of gasoline consumed
because of all the energy require to mine and refine and ship the
oil is very troubling to me. It says we're scraping the bottom of
the barrel to get this stuff. Why would they do that if there was
a better energy source? Why would we do this if we weren't
addicted to gasoline? The only sustainable solution is to use less
energy every day. We've got to listen to the signals in rising gas
prices!
I think that sign waving moment was
for Obama as his motorcade was going through the far intersection.
The Raging Grannies sang us some
songs about how evil the KX Pipeline is.
Then Lisa came out and said that
the place to go for further demonstrating was this other
corner.
This one had a row of media
satellite trucks between us and the crowd as we approached the
line.
The Brass Liberation Orchestra
did a great jazz improv show while the sign wavers did their
things and the rest of us talked. A good time was had by all.
