To mark the
2000th US casualty in Iraq, the Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Los Altos
Voices for Peace got together for a march up El Camino from Sunnyvale
City Hall to Mountain View City Hall. The above was taken at the
beginning in the parking lot at Sunnyvale City Hall.
This rolling
roll of the dead lead the march the whole distance. Each
line was the name, age, rank, and date killed for another soldier
killed in Iraq. Except for my bike, it was our
only sign that rolled on two wheels.
The fine print above the thirty thousand plus is "Iraqi Civilians
Killed:".
This was the
"right side of the street" hike.
I heard that
this guy generated considerable theological discussion. Some people
thought he might be a counter protester, but weren't sure.
The fine print on the middle picture above reads "American Service
Personnel Wounded:"
At the end Karen Meredith spoke a
few words, thanking us for working together to make it happen and
sharing a brief update on the Camp Casey crowd. One of the new things
she had seen on that trip was competition between midwestern
cities like Chicago and Milwaukee to send the biggest
delegations to DC for the big march. She just marveled at how many bus
loads of people had ended up going, despite high gas prices and
Hurricane Katrina.
