I joined a tour explaining this
memorial. The tour guide explained that each State in the Union
has a pillar around the central fountain. WW II was really two
completely different wars. The Atlantic war included everything
that happened in Europe, Africa, and the waters between there and
North America. The Pacific war was much more naval. It was all
about island hopping and sea battles. Because of that the scene
was broken into two towers separated by a nice pool with the
pillars arranged in an oval around all that.
Seemed to me that the focus of this monument was very pro
military. It also seemed to me to take the officers point of view
on things. The tour guide had explained that Senator Bob Dole was
key to making it happen, and he was a very gung ho Republican. I
guess it figures.
