On the walls were carved a couple of
his most famous speeches. One was the Gettysburg Address.
Another was his second inaugural
address.
This poster was in the basement of
the Lincoln Memorial. All around the room were display cases full
of news from the struggle for civil rights. Victory after victory
in state after state. It was clear that the name Abraham Lincoln
still stirs many to action.
I didn't stay to read them because I was distracted by my thirst
and the impossibility of finding a working water fountain. They
had a water fountain, but years of neglect had slowed the water
flow to an unusable trickle.
