Don Juan Bautista de Anza was a Spanish Governor of Mexico who had previously served in California and Sonora as a leading Indian fighter. Cu reno Verde was a Comanche leader whose raiding party got wiped out by Anza's army in the summer of 1779.  The English translation of "Cureno Verde" is "Green Horn", and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that's where the derogatory term "green horn" we still use came from.

I remember going through New Mexico on I-10. Many exits have signs that boil down to "exit here for a great Indian Trading Post." I'm wondering if they are the descendants of the ones discussed above. They looked like tourist traps at the time, but who knows? Certainly they don't try and get you off the freeway with "Indian Trading Posts" in California. Indian Casinos maybe but that's different, and a much more modern thing.
